Describing a Leaf Empty Describing a Leaf

Post  mikeschultz on Thu Jan 26 2012, 14:44

Writing on the grand and expansive nature of homo
Sapiens may seem the better work for a poet’s pen,
But then many find pleasure and peace where turmoil has been
By taking up their brushes and their pens, by following
Their hearts, their minds, their consciousnesses to describe a leaf.
Is photosynthesis’ remarkable phenomena
Gone from the fallen leaf run aground on the maremma? 1
Like old boats sunk into the mud, may they all rest in peace.

Sailor-poets express memories of the open sea.
One might fill decades with the efforts to describe a wave,
As the moon lays a silver trail across the watery grave
Of a many good sailor, stout and true, on patrol for eternity.

It’s remarkable, just how much we might see in a leaf,
And how describing it can often bring such sweet relief.

1 fertile, marshy land near the sea, esp. in Italy
.
