Hunting Off Sand Key

Post  mikeschultz on Sun Feb 12 2012, 15:18

Sand Key, a spit of sand that tops a reef
of stag and elf horn coral, and massive
mounds of brain coral sixty feet down,
at eighty feet a sand ledge and a drop

to the next ledge at two hundred feet.
We were half way between the ledges
spear fishing for our supper hoping
for grouper or red snapper or some such

nicely fleshed fish. Two five pound
snapper and one ten-pound grouper
in our catch bag we start up, pausing
on the first ledge to decompress, then

we noticed three large hammerheads
swimming through our bubbles just
fifty feet over our heads, three dark
silhouettes against the sun-lit surface.

Our bubbles increased as we watched
that primal trio swim through our
bubble column, as if they were tasting
them, and continue on into the haze.

We waited to see if they’d circle back
on the bubbles from another angle,
but they did not reappear, so we swam
for the surface and the safety of the boat.

We sold the grouper to a chef buying
fresh fish for his restaurant, bought
wine, bread and vegetables to accent
our Red Snapper, and ate like kings.

Thank you both very much.

I have been working and studying the Narrative Poem, a form that approximates a "short short story and poem blend". I might liken a Narrative Poem as Flash Fiction in Verse. However, the Narrative Poem is not to be confused with the Prose Poem in that the Narrative Poem tells a story, whereas the Prose Poem may model any number of other written styles of prose (essay, anecdote, etc.) that do not necessarily carry a story plot and such.

Sorry for the lecture. I can't help myself sometimes. I'm the head of our local writer's group, the Pen & Quill, and I never tire or talking of the richness of the craft and art of writing, prose and poetry. Though I'm sure a few of my fellow writers wish I might. doh

Thanks for reading.
