The Ballad of Skipjack Empty The Ballad of Skipjack

Post  mikeschultz on Wed Feb 22 2012, 07:44

Five and twenty years ago, Skipjack was reborn.
This name of proud ancestry wore a different form.
Her shape was called Albacore; her speed none could match.
Sailing proudly through the seas, her enemies to dispatch.

Those that came before her, now, lay in history
Though they’re gone, they still receive awed respect from me.
Chester Nimitz had the first, the SS twenty four
For nine years known as E-one, Skipjack set the score.

First with diesel engines, two; first with radio,
First with gyro-compasses to show her where to go.
First to cross the Atlantic Blue, in nineteen seventeen;
Sailing under her own power, was something before not seen.

Then came along the second one to bear Skipjack’s name.
The SS one, eighty-four; E.B.’s claim to fame.
Commissioned at New London, in nineteen thirty-eight;
She left Manila in ‘Forty-one, twelve war patrols and some raids.

She earned seven Battle Stars and numerous awards.
Now, Skipjack, we are gathered here your spirit to applaud.
Now we celebrate the marriage, Albacore to nuclear power.
Radix Nova Tridentis – Root of the New Sea Power.

Once the fastest submarine, she holds her record true –
For fastest submerged transit of the wide Atlantic, blue.
God bless the men who ride her now and those who came before.
Sail on, my love, to history: Skipjack, forevermore.

I am missing the sea and have been going back through my photos and journals and such reminding myself of my submarining days. Thanks for reading. Mike
