20th Century Troubadour

Post  mikeschultz on Tue Mar 13 2012, 08:56

A folk-singing poet, a troubadour at heart,
with a soul much troubled by discord and strife,
the stuff of which life is bound,
constricting, a boa of strength,
feathery colored bands resembling a Coral Snake.

At a remote place in a time past,
a hoary-headed fellow gazes long in the candlelight,
reading of the poetry of old, finding humanic
renderings of our human condition
in the neurotic ravings of overly sensitive souls.

A private poet retires up garret to his basement study.
He sits to write, but instead reaches for his Banjar.
He plays, and realizes he is playing,
as a boy, he was playing and enjoying himself.
Then he played on with more feeling.
.
His cares, his worries, and all of his burdens,
he set aside for just a little while and was a boy again,
making music out behind the barn,
feeling his fingers caress the strings
and ease the aching of his heart with mournful chordings:

“Your Cheating Heart” by Hank Williams (Sr.),
“House of the rising Sun,” by the Animals,
and “A Soldier’s Last Prayer,”
a song he wrote at sixteen, for those dying
in the Viet Nam War.

Though our history does not support the possibility, it would be nice, at least for a short while in our lives, to know World Peace. Thanks for reading. give flowers

oh..house of the rising sun......memories of remenising , being taught this on guitar ..love it still.

Such sadness that consumes a heart.. hoping you find that strength to remember good times when music soothes the soul.

very good poem. nice read.
