Life as We Know It

Post  mikeschultz on Sun Mar 25 2012, 05:49

Lots of work, so much work, and so little time to do it.
If we thought that we might rest or in some way intuit

The means and ways of working without such abysmal stress,
We might find some balm, some surcease, in a loving caress.

Life as we knew it seldom prepared us and yet we try
To find a fruitful way to make a living and survive.

Many false starts, detours and dead ends and so many roads,
And the way least taken, a footpath to a lone garden rose.

Work of hand, heart and mind, the triune kind that sustains us,
The soulful work of caring for our loved ones with no fuss,

How else do we learn but by loving, caring example
To live with one another, be we orange or apple?

Beautifully rendered truth, Mike!
Life as we knew it seldom prepared us
. . no, it didn't, for sure.

Hugs, bev

Dear Lucie, thank you so much for your comments on my poem. I enjoy knowing that you read them.

As to the labor of love - I love gardening. I have a small patch in which I plant peppers (chili and jalapeno), herbs (basil, thyme, etc.), and tomatoes (Roma, Cherry and Beefsteak). I call it my salsa garden. I also have a front brick walk with dwarf forsythia, dogwood (pink flowers), and carpet juniper (I don't like to mow). I'm so looking forward to getting at it, the tilling and planting and all the summer long watering and weeding. Ah, but the rewards are bountiful. sunny

Thanks again. Take care. give flowers

I don't know if I be orange or apple but your poem rings true of life. I am so enjoying reading everyone's work. I am learning a lot.

Thanks, Little Owl. I find it is by reading other poets that I begin to understand the fullness of the Art of Poetry. There is always more to learn and share. And to those who fear losing their own "voice" in reading other writers or poets, I say - Phooey! Thanks for reading.
