Beyond Window 7 Empty Beyond Window 7

I

Facing north and west,
its right flank toward the rising sun,
a symbol of America’s past
rears its equine head.
Silhouetted in black
against the morning’s reddened sky,

Whips of scorn and malice,
the dark branches hiss their warning,
darkened bolts of lightning
tending toward the center
where the sun parts the curtain
with a single shaft of light,

the Midas light
that turned the clouds to gold
and froze ground, horse and trees,
blackened as time and coal,
locked forever in a statuary garden,
just outside the 7th window.

II

Perhaps the sun is setting, after all,
If the horse were facing the other way…

And perhaps the horse is not violent
In its rearing up on hind legs to wave

A greeting, of sorts, a courting, or play
Do horses care what others see them do?

The details lost in darkness, the shaded
Side of life stands alone in base relief

III

Pride denotes noble
The noble savage is proud
Yet, she is humble.
