5/17 Skeltonics 101

Post  BC Williams on Thu May 17 2012, 06:40

First topic message reminder :

"And now, ladies and gentlemen . . . FROGS, as preformed by Red Skelton"

Frogs-Frogs-Frogs-they are everywhere.
Frogs-Frogs-Frogs-croaking fills the the air.
Louder-Louder-Louder-is their blasted blare.
There's no silence through the night.

Thanks Red, but I'm afraid that's not quite what I had in mind:-)

As wonderfully fun as Red Skelton's poem is, I'm thinking of another sort of poetry called: Skeltonics. Here's the man that inspired the form . . .

Mr John Skelton (ca.1460-1529)

Skeltonic verse features short, irregular lines with multiple rhymes, written in a tumbling, helter-skelter style.

  • Think scat-tat-mat-rat sort of end rhyme (multiple end rhyme)
  • Short lines of of no more than 6 or 7 words

Here's an example from John called: Quintus Passus

Nowe in cometh another rabell ;
Fyrst one wyth a ladell,
Another wyth a cradell,
And wyth a syde sadell :
And there began a fabell,
A clatterynge and a babell
Of folys fylly
That had a fole wyth wylly,
With, Iast you, and, gup, gylly !
She coulde not lye stylly.
Then came in a genet,
And sware by saynct Benet,
I drank not this sennet
A draught to my pay ;
Elynour, I thé pray,
Of thyne ale let vs assay,
And haue here a pylche of gray
I were skynnes of conny,
That causeth I loke so donny.
Another than did hyche her,
And brought a pottel pycher,
A tonnel, and a bottell,
But she had lost the stoppell ;
She cut of her sho sole,
And stopped therwyth the hole.
Amonge all the blommer,
Another brought a skommer,
And vgly thycke lypped,
Lyke an onyon syded,
Lyke tan ledder hyded :
She had her so guyded
Betwene the cup and the wall,
That she was there wythall
Into a palsey fall ;
Wyth that her hed shaked,
And her handes quaked :
Ones hed wold haue aked
To se her naked :
She dranke so of the dregges,
The dropsy was in her legges ;
Her face glystryng lyke glas ;
All foggy fat she was ;
She had also the gout
In all her ioyntes about ;
Her breth was soure and stale,
And smelled all of ale :
Suche a bedfellaw
Wold make one cast his craw ;
But yet for all that
She dranke on the mash fat.
There came an old rybybe ;
She haltedof a kybe,
And had broken her shyn
At the threshold comyng in,
And fell so wyde open
That one myght se her token,
The deuyll thereon be wroken !
What nede all this be spoken ?
She yelled lyke a calfe :
Ryse vp, on Gods halfe,
Said Elynour Rummyng,
I beshrew thé for thy cummyng !
And as she at her did pluck,
Quake, quake, sayd the duck
In that lampatrams lap ;
Wyth, Fy, wouer thy shap
Wyth sum flyp flap !
God gyue it yll hap,
Sayde Elynour for shame,
Lyke an honest dame.
Vp she stert, halfe lame,
And skantly could go
For payne and for wo.
In came another dant,
Wyth a gose and a gant :
She had a wide wesant ;
She was nothynge plesant ;
Necked lyke an olyfant ;
It was a bullyfant,
A gredy cormerant.
Another brought her garlyke hedes ;
Another brought her bedes
Of iet or of cole,
To offer to the ale pole :
Some brought a wymble,
Some brought a thymble,
Some brought a sylke lace,
Some brought a pyncase,
Some her husbandes gowne,
Some a pyllow of downe,
Some of the napery ;
And all this shyfte they make
For the good ale sake.
A strawe, sayde Bele, stande vtter,
For we haue egges and butter,
And of pygeons a payre.
Than sterte forth a fysgygge,
And she brought a bore pygge ;
The fleshe thereof was ranke,
And her brethe strongly stanke,
Yet, or she went, she dranke,
And gat her great thanke
Of Elynour for her ware,
That she thyther bare
To pay for her share.
Now truly, to my thynkynge,
This is a solempne drinkynge.

Have fun! I think this is doable for ALL of us . . .

Hush

Post  Lucie on Tue May 29 2012, 23:29

Hush, my flower
daddy's sour
Please find the power
F'one more hour.
Hush, my flower,
Not the now'er
I've not the strength
F'one more row'r.
Snuggle flower
in my shawler
Keep you safe
My loves a shower.
Sleep, my flower
Rock the bower,
Hush, my baby
One more hour...

OH NOOOOO's

Post  Lucie on Fri Jun 01 2012, 11:14

I know I should't write a prose
About a person's featured nose
But I can't help..IT predisposed'd
To write about the way it grows.
It started small like you'd suppose
But spread and grew WILD like a rose
With humps n' lumps and odd shaped bose
Scaffold was needed. .. Two of those!
And God forbid, when weather snow's
You have to run for cover, so's
You didn't have to change your clothes
If you stood near when it took blows.
For even when fierce weather chose
It never even bit nor froze
It always grew and always flows
Twas the fire brigade's emergency hose!!
I guess it has it's cons and pro's
Like quite by accident, it arose
That if the left nostril were to close
A melody he could then compose!
But it's not f'me, i must disclose
I couldn't ever wish to pose
In one of the town's travelling shows
And how on earth the trailer goes?..
It weighs a ton..It always slows
NO. It would fill me full of woes
But he's not down.. as it outgrows
His face, his chest..he just forgoes
That he will ever see his toes.

Miss Hood

Post  Lucie on Fri Jun 01 2012, 12:15

Down in the Wood
Lives lil'Miss Hood
Be wary, you should
She's no sugary pud'!
Wild as the wood
She hunt's f'her food
Eat YOU if she could
Don't get stuck in the mud!
Miss Hood is no fairy
She knows wolves and is scary
She's evolved to be leary
Has long teeth and is Hairy
Good grief mother Mary
Tried to save her, to spare thee...

........and spare her we might
help her with this huge plight
take away all her fight
keep her calm through the night
Lest she fancies a bite!
Poor thing's feeling beat
she just wanted a treat
now she's as white as a sheet
can hardly focus her feet
as she's pounding the street
for a morsel to eat.
Grannie's house is nearby
hope was passing her by
shall she knock just to try
Her luck running dry
'Let me in!', hear her cry.........

" not by the hairs on my chinny-chin, chin"
echo'd the cries, of a voice from within.
for who should be coming along in a whim
but the Wolf, with tummy arumbling din'...

......Twas NOT a wolf that had cometh to knock
On grannie's old door, she had fallen in shock!
twas a child robed in red, with a matching red frock
and all was not well from the look on her 'clock' *(slang word for face)
The girl had a skill
She was there for the kill
Grannie's blood she would spill
Red did laugh at the 'thrill'!......

This devilish deva crept up to her bed
She drooled over granny, tis then that she said
"Oh granny wot juicy round eyes you have in ya head
would help f'starters to help me feel fed"
twas luck for poor Granny was as deaf as a post
she hadn't a clue of the child she did host
or the thoughts of Miss Hood's' Granny-pot-roast'..

Oh this evil young Miss
Did so dribble and hiss
with excited sheer bliss
Over Grannie's remiss
Red had bent down for to kiss
Licking her lips
she bared fangs and did hiss
Poor Granny, here's the twist.

The Fall
I walk along a wall
Whereby I have a fall
Upon my knees
I do but fall
Oh what a silly fool.

Beside a fallen tree
Is where I be
Nursing my
swollen knees
This is not the
Bees-knees.

In pain I strain
But not to refrain
From crying out
To relieve the pain.

I hop and skip
And not to limp
To find the one
Who is me Mum.

For she the master
Who will not flutter
with any butter to plaster
my bleeding knees.

as miss hood lent o'er granny, she hadn't perceived
What the cunning old coot had prepared up her sleeve
For over Hood's head, granny threw her good weeve
One she'd knitted from wire, so Hood couldn't leave.
This tricky old trout was no fool to deceive
She's decended from witches! well, would ya believe!!

A bird of song
Can sing a song
A sing along
This bird of song.

A twittering a treat
A song so sweet
Can beat a sound
Within your heart.

I listen with intent
To the message sent
At the illusion itself
That a bird presents.

So take some heed
That a bird will feed
A song that's a sound
For one to believe.
