Loving Scotty

Post  BC Williams on Thu Nov 01 2012, 09:22

This poem was difficult for me to write. It's about my brother, Lee Scott, who was 13 months older than me. "Scotty" was born with a syndrome called hydrocephalus, meaning the motor part of his brain, the part that pumps water away from the brain, didn't work properly. Medical science has made much progress in modern treatment, but in 1957, treatment was crude at best. Scotty's head began to grow around the age of one year. He was unable to move or speak, so you can imagine why doctor's thought it best he be institutionalized. My mom was a nurse. She made the brave choice to keep her Scotty home. She attended to him until one cold day in late November, 1965, Scotty passed away. He never had a bedsore; his favorite record was Alvan and The Chipmunks; and I still miss him very much . . .

. . . Loving Scotty

He was small yet still as winter trees.
His wordless thoughts she could read
through his gazing child eyes plea
and capture mother's silent screams.
In all those times of routine
baths and exercises between perpetually
turning him to and fro,
and those gauzy, homemade 'tootsie rolls' -
her love for him grew free.

Time saw fit to grow so bold
his beautiful head, and like a yellow rose,
brother Mark and I were told
his head did the angels uphold.
We'd look upon his precious face
with smiles and laughing and loves embrace
and we never never supposed his case
forgotten before Father's throne.

Tiny tears and throaty gurgles,
he never ran with us in circles
but his saddened eyes would strive with us
in play just near his crib.
He was mother's child and our brother dear
and our unspoken, soaring prayers were near
on lips that only Heaven could hear . . .
for this child from daddy's rib.

Thank you Sue. As I told someone else, it's been nearly 50 years since Scot passed away, and it still hurts me and makes me tear up when I think of him . . .

Nothing I can think of that can come close to expressing what I am feeling
So the best thing I can say is beautiful Bevy

We have known each other a long time now, years in fact, and we have told each other so much.
I love having you as a friend, and long may it last hug

Same here Peter. I knew this would get to you, that you've probably run into this at sometime in your career. It effected me in ways I can't - don't understand myself. My mother and I both had nervous breakdowns when he died. The day found us snowed in. Living way in the country, I couldn't go to school, dad couldn't get out the drive for work, and Mark hadn't begun school yet. It was God's hand, keeping us there with mom and Scott. He simply stopped breathing. She turned back to the kitchen to get his spoon to feed him, and when she returned, he was gone . . ..

deep thought

Yes it was Lucie, but he brought much to our lives. I'm thankful for having a mother that loved him enough to do what needed done. She, too, affected me profoundly. deep thought

AWE LASS XXXX

Post  Robert Anderson on Tue Jan 22 2013, 22:27

What can I say lass? You never told me about this part of your life. But I will tell you this, you did this piece proud and with dignity. Had I known this about you back then, things would have been different between us and I would have held my mouth shut. Well done Bev. It takes a brave and extraordinary girl to create a piece so close to the heart xxxxxxxxx Now you have made him Immortal . Well done .

Your friend always xxxxxxxxxxxx
