Daddy’s Girl

Daddy’s Girl Empty Daddy’s Girl

Post  mikeschultz on Sun Nov 18 2012, 06:00

I watched a soldier at church holding his newborn baby girl
In his two hands, so tenderly stretched out to make a cradle.
His daughter washed away the stains of war from his hands,

A newborn baby girl, as surely God alone understands
The depths of the bond of love between dad and daughter, able
To withstand tests of time and distance and Life, and even war.

A pink band about her head, she looked like a tiny princess.
Silently I watched as they danced their first father-daughter dance.

How like Time to give us something precious, but just for a while,
For much like an epiphany, baby, then toddler and tyke,
Each stage makes much of the others to fade into poetry.

The soldier cradled his daughter in his hands, rocked her gently,
And I could hear him humming to her some tune she seemed to like.
Even from across the aisle and two pews back, I saw her smile.

Via Facebook I was asked to write a poem on childhood. I have four "failed" attempts I would be glad to share upon request. This however, is the best of the lot, in that it is positive, or at least I hope it proves to be so. Thanks for reading. Mike

Thank you, Lucie. I thank you so very much.

I'm quite fond of this poem as it came straight out of real life, no poetic license required. My wife cried a little when she read it.

In fact, it was she who recommended that I write of that moment we'd both witnessed. I had explained to her the difficulty I was having writing a positive poem about children. You see, I'm the eldest of ten and had to raise my brothers and sisters. And later, when I retired from the Navy, I tried to become a teacher and soon gave that up to repair my jangled nerves.

So, all being said, it's when they're babies that I like them best.

There's an old comedian who was fond of saying in his raspy voice, "Anyone who hates dogs and children can't be all bad." As with a lot of jokes, there rings a bit of truth in this one too. Well, 'nuff said. I have jibber-jabber fingers this morning.

Hope your day is good. Thanks again for your kind comments.
