An Old Boy and His Guitar Empty An Old Boy and His Guitar

He packs his pipe, as through Bose speakers,
Thompson’s “Vincent Black Lightning 1952”
With some of the finest acoustic guitar work
He’s ever heard. Transported, he turns down
The “Shootist,” turns up the stereo, and listens.

Each note lifts him, making him uniquely aware
Of its order, chaos at bay. As the music plays
He knows he hears an old troubadour still singing,
Seasoned but not beyond his years, not yet.
Like him, (he puffs at his pipe) he too sings.

He loves to sing, but cannot well embrace
Audiences and crowds, so he sings locally.
Mr. Thompson’s fret work draws him back
From his remembrances. And again,
His heart takes up the beat of the music,

“Vincent Black Lightning 1952,” as beautiful
A song of love as has ever been penned.
Too soon it ends, and like an epiphany it fades,
Like the Cavendish smoke from his pipe.
He takes up his guitar and sings his best song.
