So The Land Can Feed Us

Post  Fred West on Mon Jan 14 2013, 05:21

So the Land can Feed Us
Standing and looking across the fens thinking of a time way back when, the horses were in harness and the man would plough the fields,
Plodding along one furrow at a time not with a tractor and wheels.
They would plough away one single furrow at a time,
Thinking of girlfriends and beer and wine,
Trying not to think of the sun and its rays, and how they would get brown as they went through each day.
The mares were in the harness, plodding through the day; the stallions were sent around the fens and allowed to have their wicked way,
And wherever the stallions were at the end of the day that is where the stallion boy would stay.
The mares were taken out of harness and the stallion would go at his job,
Then the mares would be put back in and plod away down the field, helping the farmer get the best yield.
Today the horses are no more, only for riding and sharing history among men,
Today fields are ploughed my fit young men, on tractors that plough at 10 furrows a time,
Making the fields to get eaten by the plough, faster and faster each year.
Years ago you, would stand on road and hear the harness clank as the mares would move across the field,
Nowadays we see the tractor slicing away at the stubble after yields,
Getting ready to put next year’s crop in, and all in the same day as they plough.
One tractor ploughs and one then behind comes with the power harrow and drill behind,
From dawn to dusk they get ready again, so that land can feed us.
