Oh, I am a hungry tortoise
And I can't run very well
It's a hard life when you're shackled
By a string tied through your shell.

I don't know why I've got it
'Cos it takes me seven weeks
To crawl across the garden
To the cabbages and leeks!

Oh, I am a slow old tortoise
And it's hard to keep up pace
When all the snails and slimy slugs
Are keen to win the race!

Oh, I'm dying for a nibble
At a lettuce leaf or two
But when I eventually get there
I find the slugs have ate that too!

So, If you see me in your garden
All lost and all forlorn
Spare a lettuce leaf or two ( or three )
And shove it on the lawn!
