The House Empty The House

Post  Sue McDonald on Wed Aug 28 2013, 21:43

On yonder hill I found this house
full of cobwebs and a little field mouse
grass in the gutters, of what there was left,
roof was all rusty, held together with bird nests

Window frames rotten, glass all smashed
door locks were busted, remains on the steps,
walls that were left, had crumbled or cracked
it still had its chimneys, they hadn't collapsed !

Standing there proudly alone on the hill
its once proud facade  no longer a thrill
this family home, of which it must have been
has long since been left, family no longer keen

The land has turned baron, fruit trees are bare
the water that was, is no longer to share
creeks that were flowing have dried to a holt
they no longer feed rivers, its a silent revolt

Sadness and decay of buildings and barns
curiously give out excitement and charm
as this family home, empty and distraught
catches the eye of a tramp with no thought

A corner to share in a room with field mouse
is all that is wanted, from the tramp in the house
to shelter from wind that just chills to the bone
the tramp and the mouse share the derelict home

The stone walls and chimneys, that have kindly been left
could tell plenty of stories of joy and neglect
but we never will know all the tales, true or false
coz the tramp has moved on and there is just the field mouse !
