the never silent fields

Go down

the never silent fields

Post  Fred West on Tue May 15 2012, 08:46

The never silent fields
He walked along the furrow of the field
Noises he could hear smoke he could see
Shells were bursting all around
Men shouting ‘I am too young to die’
He moved on and saw shell casings bounce onto then hard ground
His feet moving all the time over fresh wheat and seeing the sun shine down on a land he knew so well.
Boarding the bus the picture from his mind fading away,
Five miles down the road and another field waited,
He walked that also and heard the boys shout,
Some shouted his name for they would never leave, staying here fighting the battle very day
Never to go home again never to fit I, who was this elderly man who knew their names knew their thoughts, was he one of them??
He got back on his bus and knew he would never return, this one last time he had visited his mates,
Now he stood, old and nearly at the gates,
Would they know him when he met them, he knew every name it was not a silly game
It was war and it was real but oh so long ago.... for him.

Fred I love this poem it shouts what a survivor would think and reflect upon.
Most war veterans of the old wars would fear returning to their old battlegrounds. Their memories of friends or relations lost during those times would come back. I no most of the soldiers would hardly ever speak about the time in the war, maybe if they did it would have to clear the heads of all the horrors they endured.
A lovely poem for all the soldiers past and present who have to walk onto a battlefield. Like a Star @ heaven Like a Star @ heaven British
