standing giants

standing giants

Standing Giants
They stand like giants there in the Fens,
Gathering wind and taking them into the sails,
Turning round the water and the wind, waiting for a gail.
The arms are turning round and round, at each turn water is moved, from one ditch to another it is what these giants do,
Some run round and grind the corn; others move water from ditch to river.
They sit high on the banks and are moved by man,
Round the greased workings so that the wind can blow through the sails all day, making flour and bran for woman and man,
Over the years pumps have taken their place,
Moving more water than there was even space,
Water coming up to the top of the ditch, pumps switching on and moving it without any hitch.
Now the big sailed giants stand and are heard no more,
Some have the sails gone and they have a new door,
Some will never grind corn anymore.
People come to live in the giants these days,
They take down the sail and move furniture in, the sails they are put away and are now very thin,
The rooms are round and bricked up through the middle, no mouse now to watch the cat playing its fiddle.
So pumps pump the water throughout day and night
No more giants needed through the fens anymore
Just museums saying this is what we used to do with the mills,
The wind is still there and still blows through the land,
But the giants are still and used no more
But the water is pouring through the drains and the rivers
Feel safe people the pumps are pumping water today
No floods for us...we hope.

Fred,

I really enjoyed your poem. Your sense of nostalgia and longing for the old ways (if I may be so presumptious) ring resonant chords with me. I feel much the same about lighthouses. Thank you.
